When do I mail my wedding invitations?

Planning a wedding is a game of dates. Get yourself a sturdy calendar, brides... you're going to need it!

The first question that always gets asked when I sit down with a bride is, "when do I mail out my invitations?" The answer is 6 to 8 weeks prior to your wedding date.

Know your guest list!

If you have a lot of out of town guests, you'll want to give them as much notice as possible, and plan to mail around the 8 week mark. This is also where Save the Dates come in handy. But that's for another post all-together! Eight (8) weeks allows your guests to have plenty of time to make travel arrangements. You'd hate for someone to not be able to attend your most special event just because they didn't know the plans in enough time!

On the other hand, if your list is made up of in-town family and friends who don't need to book flights, cars or hotels, then 6 weeks is still enough time for them to mark their calendars and book a sitter, if needed.

When do I order my invitations then?

Modern processes have done wonders for the invitation ordering and mailing timeline! However custom wedding invitations and letterpress still take time.

Each invitation designer, stationer or printer's timeline may vary, so be sure to check with your chosen vendor for what they suggest.

To make it easy for my clients, I've put a chart together specific to my design and printing schedule.

Don't forget: Envelope addressing takes time!

The detail that may often get overlooked is addressing. Whether you plan to hire a calligrapher, hand-address them yourself or have them digitally addressed, you'll need to allow time, sometimes weeks, for that to happen. Don't put yourself in a bind where you'll be receiving your invitations right at the time when you should be mailing them out.

Again, be sure to check with whomever you plan to do the addressing about how long they need to properly complete the task. It will vary from person to person!

Want good, quality service? Plan ahead!

An organized bride who contacts her vendors in plenty of time will reap the benefits! When wedding vendors get a bride who is handling details at the last minute, we are unable to provide the quality and caliber of service that we pride ourselves on! If you are rushed, we are rushed! You will find that many vendors regretfully, won't be able to accommodate your last minute requests.

So do yourself a favor and plan as far ahead as you can so that you can get the venues, flowers, invitations and caterer that you want and that you get the quality service that you deserve!

As always, if you have questions feel free to post a comment or drop me an email! I'd love to help in any way I can!
